1111 Belle Pre

alexandria | VA

Located in Old Town Alexandria, this mixed-use development consists of two buildings with 360 residential units and 10,000 square feet of ground level retail. Formerly this site was home to the Belle Pre-Bottle Company, which supplied bottles for milk, medicine, beer, and spirits until 1921. This rich history was incorporated and celebrated into the project’s overall design aesthetic.

A vibrant plaza space is located at the heart of the project and spans over a parking garage structure below. The pedestrian space is punctuated with sculptural elements that utilize glass in their design and reuse the existing steel train rails which until now, ran alongside Fayette Street. Tree planters flank Fayette St and showcase the recovered rails which were embedded into the pavement. This detail coupled with the architect’s utilization of milk bottles in the unit balcony railings provided an elegant nod to the site’s history.

Additionally, the project also included a rooftop pool terrace that allows a place of respite and sweeping views of the national monuments just across the Potomac river.
