Oyster School PRI served as the landscape architecture consultants for a new bilingual school and luxury apartment complex. A public/private venture resulted in the construction of the James E. Oyster Bilingual Elementary School, the first new public school to be built in the District of Columbia in 20 years. An existing school on the site was razed, and a portion of the site was traded to LCOR. In return LCOR built the new 47,000 sf. school and an adjoining 211-unit apartment complex on the property. The school's construction cost was underwritten by an $11 million, 35-year tax-exempt bond package issued by the school district and will be repaid from revenue generated by apartment building. The focal point is the school central plaza which includes creative play areas for all students and beautiful peripheral landscaping, all of this over structured parking. The courtyard concepts were presented in a "primary" reader children's book that convinced the school officials and parents to support the unique partnership. |
