Avocet Tower
Bethesda | MD
Avocet Tower is an iconic twenty-three story mixed-use building with a partially covered plaza opening on to Wisconsin and Montgomery Avenues in the urban core of Bethesda. The concept engages the city with a grand public space where visitors to the office, hotel, and retail within the building can enjoy vistas of a vibrant skyline as well as historic structures. The interactive cloud artwork and large rippling fountain draw passersby into the plaza and dining terrace.
In addition to the 10,000 square foot plaza, a large rooftop terrace, green roofs and bioretention planters are located at different levels of the building. The twenty-second level rooftop terrace is as grand as the plaza below and serves as an architectural landmark on the city skyline.
The project revitalizes this block and, more importantly, creates a new dynamic for the surrounding neighborhood which includes the Bethesda Metro Station, the nearby Bethesda Row shopping district, and numerous new retail and dining opportunities.
The project is ground-breaking as it is only the second design to be completed under the revised Downtown Sector Plan for Bethesda, which includes a new 250-foot height limit. The project was awarded LEED platinum certification.
