Heritage of Old Town
Alexandria | VA
The redevelopment of the Heritage of Old Town complex will become a major gateway into the historic core of Old Town Alexandria and will include three Multifamily buildings totaling 777 multifamily affordable and market rate residential units with underground parking. The preservation of affordable housing in this section of Old Town has been an ongoing discussion for several years and this project delivers on those goals. Each building provides several recreational amenities including a swimming pool, grilling areas, fire pits, and lounge seating within several courtyards and rooftop terraces.
The project also creates a strong public open space offering with a variety of spaces including several pocket parks, a mid-block pedestrian passageway, a complete enhancement of the streetscape along 4 streets and the creation of the Wilkes Street Linear Park.
A major component of the plan is the redesign of Wilkes Street ROW into a new Park space located at the center of the development. Parker Rodriguez has worked with the Parks and Recreation Commission and the community to develop a new linear park that provides spaces for informal gathering and play as well as accommodating pedestrians and bicycles traversing the park. The park features a plaza on both sides of S. Alfred St., play areas, central lawn, many seating opportunities, a memorial garden, and a major public park installation.
