Oakland Hall | University of Maryland
College Park | MD
Oakland Hall is the first new dormitory built on the University of Maryland’s main campus in thirty years. The design played a key role in helping to fit the new building into the fabric of the campus through careful siting, screening and softscape treatments of the building façade and surrounding service areas.
The landscape design includes a main public space for use by students and staff which serves as a critical role in people’s everyday experiences. This project capitalizes on a large green at the front of the building and a more intimate terrace overlooking native woodlands at the back. The project achieved LEED Gold certification with help from the integration of green landscape strategies, including reducing irrigation demand, native plant use, and water recrimination for use in irrigation.
