Maizon Bethesda

Bethesda | MD

Maizon Bethesda is a private urban residential development consisting of 229 residential units in a six-story building located in Downtown Bethesda, MD. The transit-oriented residential development is in close proximity to Metro Rail’s Bethesda Station and across the street from Bethesda Elementary School’s athletic fields. The initial project development began when eight previously developed parcels that stretched along the eastern frontage of the 7500 block of Arlington Road were joined into a single 1.3 acre urban redevelopment site.

A goal of the overall landscape design was to enrich the neighborhood by creating an iconic streetscape and spaces that bolster placemaking. This was assisted early on in the design stage by consolidating the garage and loading entries to a single curb cut allowing for an uninterrupted landscape edge treatment on the majority of frontages. The development incorporated art, seating areas and a robust palette of biodiverse and native plantings to further ‘green’ the public realm. The design team and owner took great care and consideration to the architecture and landscape to ensure that it weaved seamlessly into the existing urban fabric of the community.

Outdoor design features included providing two civic art works, safe and walkable pedestrian pathways on all site frontages, bike racks and street lighting and continuous tree lined streets with public seating nooks. The incorporation of a public mid-block connector further provided a strong pedestrian connection to a newly constructed adjacent public plaza on Edgemoor Lane.
